Former Southern Baptist Convention president leading local revival this week

Former Southern Baptist Convention president Johnny Hunt will be back on his home turf this week to  preach a local revival.

Hunt, who grew up in Lumberton and once preached at Longleaf Baptist Church in Wilmington, will open the revival and men’s conference at Northside Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10.

Northside’s senior pastor Kenny Chinn said Hunt’s leading a revival there has become a regular occurrence over the years. Hunt was SBC president from 2008-2010.

“Johnny and I have been friends for a long, long time. He’s been doing this for me every year for the last 10 years,” he said. Hunt will preach one night and speak during sessions of the men’s conference, Chinn added.

  1. In 1975 or 1976, Johnny Hunt was a marine hardware salesman for Jacobi Hardware in Wilmington. He didn’t know much about boats, but he sure could sell! He was a part-time preacher at that point; he left Jacobi to go into the ministry full-time, and I was hired in his stead. I knew much about boats, but I could never sell like him! I guess he went on to a different product line! Johnny Hunt has come a long way in 35 years!
