Meet Jennifer Johnson, our mindfulness blogger

Please say howdy to Jennifer Johnson, our mindfulness blogger. She is a mindfulness-based psychotherapist and wellness coach in private practice in Wilmington. She’s also a writer and photographer who teaches Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses as well as workshops and retreats on Mindful Writing, mindfulness and yoga, and mindfulness and creativity. Jennifer has practiced Insight Meditation since 1985, and she is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200).

“Jennifer is interested in mindfulness as a spiritual and applied practice and a tool for personal, social, and environmental healing and change. Mindfulness is awareness of the present moment without judgment, and opportunities to practice this exist in every moment, regardless of one’s religious beliefs. Jennifer enjoys teaching people how to be more mindful in the everyday moments, whether through developing greater resilience to the stress of daily living, being more present to experience the beauty of the world around them, opening their hearts to being more loving and compassionate toward themselves and others, being open to accessing their full creative potential, or gracefully meeting whatever arises in each moment. When people cultivate the mindfulness skills to be present with their own circumstances, they naturally become more compassionate and loving toward themselves and more invested in their own self-care. This compassion and care then begins to extend to others and to the environment. People begin to see how we’re all connected, and they see how their own person healing impacts social and environmental healing.

Jennifer has been in private practice since 1999 and has worked with people with chronic illness, anxiety, depression, PTSD, food/weight issues, and catastrophic injury. She has experienced the power that mindfulness practice has on people’s healing process, and she has experienced how her own mindfulness practice has increased her capacity to be present with others’ pain. Jennifer previously worked as rehabilitation counselor at Shepherd Center, a brain injury and spinal cord injury rehabilitation hospital, director of a crisis helpline at a child abuse prevention agency, and an intake counselor in a psychiatric hospital.
