One Brave Christian Experiment: Day 11, Drive-by Sermons

Sam Teague’s selected scripture for today left me searching for something better.

With a church marquee on most street corners, Wilmington offers plenty of inspiration from “drive-by sermons.”

Like a lot of writers, I keep notebooks everywhere. I carry one in my car for those enlightening quotes I see on bumper stickers, license plates and… church marquees.

I titled it “A Driver’s Manual to Signs of Spirit.”

Ready for the ride? Buckle up. It’s the law! (The church sign quotations are in all caps.)

For an uplifting experience:

FOLLOW THE SIGNS.

EVERY JOURNEY BEGINS WITH A STEP.

It doesn’t matter which way you go. You can’t get lost.

TRUTH IS ONE. PATHS ARE MANY.

IF YOU’RE HEADED IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, GOD ALLOWS U-TURNS.

You may want to travel light ‘cause:

THE WEIGHT OF YOUR PACK AFFECTS THE EXPERIENCE OF THE JOURNEY.

And it might be the journey of a lifetime:

FAITH IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION.

Watch your attitude:

ANGER IS JUST ONE LETTER SHORT OF DANGER.

No matter what, stay present:

FAITH IS A REFUSAL TO PANIC.

MINDFULLNESS IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE.

Short on cash for tithing? Try a new ATM:

ATM INSIDE: ATONEMENT, TRUTH, MERCY.

And be comforted to know that:

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE NOT THINGS.

A TRUE FRIEND IS YOUR BEST TREASURE.

Remember: you’ll get there soon enough, with perfect timing. Just realize who’s the designated driver:

IF GOD IS YOUR CO-PILOT, SWAP SEATS.

RELAX. GOD IS IN CONTROL.

DO YOUR BEST, LET GOD DO THE REST.

You’ll go further, faster, when you demonstrate that:

KIND WORDS ARE A HONEYCOMB,

SWEET TO THE SOUL, HEALING TO THE BONES.

Smile, you’re on camera:

SMILES ARE CONTAGIOUS. ARE YOU A CARRIER?

Feeling disillusioned by romance? Switch to divine love:

GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD. AND THAT INCLUDES YOU.

GOD LOVES YOU.

GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME.

If you have problems sleeping at night:

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS, NOT YOUR PROBLEMS.

DON’T BE TROUBLED. PEACE. BE STILL.

PRAYERS SHOULD BE THE KEY OF THE DAY AND THE LOCK OF THE NIGHT.

Life is short. Do you have a goal?

LOOKING FOR A CHANGE? INQUIRE WITHIN.

But don’t fool yourself:

PRAYER WITHOUT FAITH IS JUST WISHFUL THINKING.

Go for the real thing:

LET US ASPIRE TO INSPIRE BEFORE WE EXPIRE.

Because it’s the only way to get where we all want to be:

WHEN THE POWER OF LOVE OVERCOMES THE LOVE OF POWER,

THE WORLD WILL KNOW PEACE.

The countdown has begun to the end of Lent, but you still have 29 days to figure it out:

40 DAYS OF PURPOSE. “WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU HERE FOR?”

And if you don’t like driving, here’s an exercise program for you:

EXERCISE DAILY: WALK WITH THE LORD.

DON’T RUN WITH THE WORLD. WALK WITH GOD!

IF YOU CAN KNEEL BEFORE THE LORD, YOU CAN STAND UP IN FRONT OF EVERYONE.

Of course, you can always try:

LIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE.

Unless you already know how to:

LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE.

LIFE IS GOOD.

EXPERIENCE GLAD TIDINGS.

LIVE EACH DAY WITH A SPIRIT OF GRATITUDE.

And for those of us who refuse to turn on their computers on Sunday, let it be known God delights in wireless, unplugged living because:

GOD ANSWERS KNEE-MAIL.
